The Bacon Bubble Will Never Burst

I am really getting sick of articles that try to convince us that there is something wrong with liking bacon and that it’s just a fad that will fade away. For example, there was an article recently in the Wall Street Journal titled “Bacon Backlash“. It talks about how bacon is now in everything and it’s about time chefs learn a new trick. Here check out the articles tag line:

When bacon appears in cocktails, mashed potatoes and cupcakes, you know it’s time for chefs to find a new trick.

There is one thing that should tell you that this article is full of it just by the tag line. It’s that fact that the author is blown away that a chef would have the balls to put bacon in mashed potatoes. Maybe the guy is Jewish so he doesn’t know any better, but bacon and potatoes have been good friends for a long time.

The rest of the article is a big waste to time to read. All it is, is a plea for chefs to use other exotic ingredients in foods like smoked salt and mango vinegar.

What he doesn’t understand is, bacon is not a fad or a hot trend. It’s a food that just about every American has a connection with.

It wasn’t until the invention of the internet that people started to realize that there are a lot of other bacon lovers out there. We created blogs to express our love, chefs embraced us with open arms, we start festivals about our common idea that everyone should enjoy bacon, and the list goes on.

What I am trying to say is, the internet, chefs, TV, hipsters, or MTV didn’t start the bacon craze. Bacon did and it’s been doing it ever since it was created. The internet just made it possible for us to express it with al large audience. Then chefs just created new ways for us to enjoy it so don’t blame them. We, the Bacon Nation, have always been around, you just didn’t notice us before.

Bacon is here to stay and there is nothing you can do about it. Either enjoy bacon with us, or go back to your stinky tofu and leave us alone. Thanks!

Bacon LIVE: Bacon’s Big News Week

On last night’s show Sean and I had a lot of bacon news to cover. The Bacon Salt guys are raising money for cancer with a giant Kevin Bacon head made of bacon. IHOP is jumping on the bacon bandwagon, better late than never. Then Batter Blaster is releasing bacon pancakes in a can.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. You will have to watch or listen to the show to find out what else we talked about.

If you want to watch the show, sadly only the first 25 minutes recorded. It seemed messed up yet again. This is why I am so happy that we started recording the audio of the show on my computer. That way you can hear the full show via iTunes or some other mp3 player.

Lastly, I need you guys to help me stay on top of all this bacon news. If you see anything new, send me or Sean an email about it right away. Thanks and enjoy bacon!

Bacon Tattoos Make Everything Better

I have been kicking around the idea of getting a bacon tattoo for awhile, but don’t have the balls to actually do it. Over the weekend one of our Facebook fans dug up this blog post about the “12 Craziest Bacon Tattoos”. There were a few I haven’t seen before so I thought I would share it with you guys.

The one above is the only one I liked. It reminds me of my favorite bacon shirt from, also featured above. If I was going to get a bacon tattoo it would be a mix of the two. I like shirts logo but I also like how the pig in the tattoo has a little environment to live in. The listing of all pig parts is also a nice touch.

Check out the post and let us know what your favorites are. Also, I looked and couldn’t find any other bacon tattoos (I thought there would be more). If you find any others, let us know and we will post them up!

Bacon-Wrapped Pizza Log by Junior Redwood

I think I smell the next YouTube sensation and it’s a guy named Junior Redwood. He is new to YouTube so there is not a lot of information about the guy. All I know about him is he is a bacon lover, a PBR drinker, and a patriot (aka a true American).

His first video is a cooking show where he makes a Bacon-Wrapped Pizza Log. He calls it a rip-off of the Bacon Explosion but after watching the video I would just say he was inspired by the EB. This is defiantly his own creation.

I know the video is long, but I would highly suggest you watch the whole thing. Junior says a few gems that you will not want to miss. I also enjoy how he says PBR and diced. Honesty, I can’t get enough of this guy.

I am trying to get him booked to do an interview on Bacon LIVE. I will keep you posted on what we work out.

I really hope that he makes more of these cooking shows and that they involve bacon. We might have to give him a segment here on Mr.Baconpants if he keeps it up!

You can thank Heather of Bacon Unwrapped for finding this guy.

Bacon LIVE: Fast Food Fiasco

I don’t know what’s going on, but it seems like each new Bacon LIVE show is better than the last. On last night’s show Sean and I talked about our somewhat related fast food fiasco stories. It seems we both had our food orders messed up on the same day at two different McDonalds. WTF! Watch the show to hear how badly they messed up.

We also talked about the new Wendy’s Pick 2 menu. I was surprised when Sean kind of agreed with me about the size of the salads being too big and that the 1/2 size salad was a nice option. Also since we know Wendy’s watches the show, we asked them to create a free bacon day, a milkshake, and to fix their sisters company’s (Arby’s) bacon.

There was a lot of funny stuff said on the show and you are just going to have to watch or listen to experience them. Remember it’s always more fun to watch us live!

Wendy’s BLT Cobb Salad and Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger is a match made in heaven

Wendy’s just sent me an email telling me about their new “Pick 2” combo menu. After reading about the new menu it confirms someone in Wendy’s corporate office is a fan of Bacon LIVE.

If you’re an avid watcher of Bacon LIVE you should know that Sean and I both tried and loved the BLT Cobb Salad from Wendy’s. Sean’s only complaint was the price; he thought it should have been a little cheaper. My only complaint was the size of the salad; I thought it was a little too big. I can’t eat a lot of leafy greens all at once, it puts my body in shock.

Well someone who makes decisions at Wendy’s heard our cries and created the “Pick 2” combo menu.

Basically with the “Pick 2”, you get half sized garden select salad and on additional item (out of seven) off the menu for only $4.99. This solves our only complaints about the new salads, price and size. It’s great having so much power and influence in the food industry.

Check out the menu which offers 28 possible combinations:

Garden Select Salads:

  • Apple Pecan Chicken Salad, a mix of peak-season red and green apples, real blue cheese crumbles, sweet cranberries and roasted pecans, topped with warm grilled chicken
  • Baja Salad, a hearty Southwestern salad that features fresh pico de gallo, guacamole and Wendy’s original chili, all topped with a red jalapeno dressing
  • Spicy Chicken Caesar Salad, offering hand-chopped Romaine lettuce and sweet grape tomatoes topped with shaved Asiago cheese and warm spicy chicken
  • BLT Cobb Salad, which mixes crispy Applewood Smoked Bacon with real blue cheese crumbles, hard-boiled eggs, tomatoes and an avocado ranch dressing

Other Goodies: (you pick one from this menu)

  • Wendy’s Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger with thick-cut Applewood Smoked Bacon
  • Wendy’s rich and meaty chili
  • a Baked Potato
  • a grilled or spicy homestyle Chicken Go Wrap
  • Dasani bottled water
  • small Frosty
  • any other small-size beverage

I really like this new menu and price, but something tells me that Sean will not be as satisfied. Tune in to this week’s Bacon LIVE find out what he has to say. Also, since we have Wendy’s attention, maybe we can get them to fix the bacon at sister company, Arby’s. One can only hope.

Bacon LIVE: We talk about bacon… sometimes!

Last night’s show was wild. I think Sean and I only talked about something bacon or beer related 3-4 times at the most. Next week we will try to say on topic. Still, some people say some our best shows are like the one last night. So you will want to watch or listen to this one right away. It’s going to be what everyone is talking about this weekend.

We covered so much ground that it would be imposable for me to tell you everything we talked about. The most important announcement we made was, the deadline for the Great Sugardale Bac-on is fast approaching, September 26, 2010.

That’s all for now. Be sure to tune in live next week and enjoy bacon!
