I would bet their database has grown substantially since you panned them in 2006. I use last.fm sometimes, which serves a similar purpose as Pandora but relies on user input instead of "music genetics." Likewise, it seems like their recommendations are more interesting now than they were a few years ago. I think it has a lot to do with the size and quality of the database.
