Bacon Eating Contest

baconvid.jpg

Here is the video I took of the intense bacon eating contest at the first annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival. If for some unknown reason you don’t know what that is, I advise you to check out this recap right away.

This was the best part of the event. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. The smell of bacon, the roaring crowds (ohhhh bacon!), and the steady (some not so steady) eyes of the bacon Gladiators waiting to devour 3lbs of (cooked) bacon. It was a sight to see, I can’t wait till next year.

Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival: Recap

baconfesthead.jpg

The Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival in Des Moines, Iowa was a bacontastic event. There was so much bacon goodness I don’t know if I can even give it justice with only my words. That’s why during this week I will be posting a lot of videos and photos of the event.

I would like to mention how impressed I am with Iowa’s capitol city, it’s clean, new, and the traffic is very mild. The people that live there are so friendly and they left a lasting impression on me. Des Moines is a city with a small town atmosphere. I felt safe and comfortable as soon as I got into town.

This is the part where I bore you with vacation pictures. The following pictures were uploaded live via my cell phone. Continue reading ‘Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival: Recap’

Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival

Bacon Fest

I am going to Des Moines Iowa. I know what your thinking, “Mosley, why in the hell are you going to Iowa”? Well I am going to Iowa for the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival. That’s right, a whole day of nothing but bacon and PBR.

WHAT: Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival.
WHERE: El Bait Shop and High Life Lounge, 200 S.W. Second St., Des Moines.
WHEN: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 1.
ADMISSION: $30, which includes T-shirt, bacon bracelet, bacon menu and samples, bacon lecture, one drink, $1 Pabst Blue Ribbon draw and bacon-eating contest. Tickets available Friday at El Bait Shop.

I thought $30 was a lot of money, but if you think about wine tasting events cost that much and you don’t even get a free t-shirt. So I think its a good value after you really think about what your getting. Which its a whole day dedicated to enjoying bacon!

Here is the days Agenda:
10:00 Registration and Breakfast, Bacon Egg & Cheese Biscuit
10:30 First Tasting
11:00 All About Bacon lecture from Leo Landis & Second Tasting
11:30 Third Tasting
12:00 Fourth Tasting & Bacon Showcase
1:00 Lunch 7 course Bacon Meal - cheeseburger sliders, bacon wrapped shrimp, bacon wrapped tots, rumaki, armadillo egg (cheese wrapped with a pepper wrapped with chicken that is then wrapped in bacon and fried), candied bacon and Bacon Maple Cheesecake with a Templeton Rye Whiskey Walnut Glaze (A guy from Sara Lee’s test kitchen in Chicago was testing it out last week.)
1:30 Fifth Tasting
2:00 That boy is a P.I.G. eating contest
2:30 Sixth Tasting
3:00 Announcement of Blue Ribbon winners!

The Des Moines Register wrote a nice article about the event. Look near the bottom and see who they mention (ME!). Even the local bloggers are talking about it, check out this article from Pressdog.

While I am at this event I am going to be live blogging it via cellphone (Centro). I will be posting text updates to my Twitter and posting photo updates to my Flickr. I will also be taking my Flip Ultra to shoot some videos to post on YouTube. The Monday after the event I will compile all this information into a nice blog post. Just in case you were not able to follow the updates live.

UPDATE: This event officially sold out in one day. The power of bacon is proven once again.

Doughnuts In November

On Saturday November 3rd one of Mexico’s greatest bands Doughnuts in November (DIN) played a Halloween Party at the Creative Treehouse in Bellevue, PA. Here are a few pictures from the show.

I asked them if they were just wearing the masks because it was an Halloween party. Doug Dickens, the lead singer simply replied, “What masks”? You can learn more about this band at their MySpace page.

The two other bands that played the event were, Children of October (COO) and the Shutouts. This was my first time seeing the Shutouts and I was impressed. They played a good mix of originals and obscure covers to keep it interesting. COO played a good set too, but they forgot to play one of the crowd favorites. I guess I will have to wait till next time to hear it.

Rumor has it that there will be some video of the Shutouts from the event coming out soon. Just keep checking their myspace for updates. Also, the bassist in DIN has some yummy looking pants, could they be baconpants?

One Last Reason to Wear your Costume

itsalive.jpg

This weekend I’m heading out to the Creative Treehouse in Bellevue, for one last reason to wear my Halloween Costume. Here is a quick rundown of the Haunted Treehouse event. It starts at 7:30pm Saturday, Nov. 3rd. It will include a pumpkin carving competition, with giveaways for the most creative pumpkin, in addition to a Halloween-themed art gallery. Costumes are encouraged, with a cover charge of $3 with costume, or $5 without. Treats and nonalcoholic beverages will be provided. BYOB is welcomed by anyone 21 and over. There will also be live music. Just check out this post or creativetreehousepgh.com for more information.

Cooking Bacon at the Creative Marathon

Mrbaconpants.com’s sponsorship of the Creative Marathon was a big success. I was surprised how many people already knew about the blog and who I was. I guess being one of the few people in the world that blog about bacon it’s not that hard to be recognized for it. You can view all the pictures of the event on flickr.com and read the live updates about the event at 24hourcreativemarathon.com.

Mosleys Artwork
This is the artwork I created during the event. I used colored ink, acrylic, water color. I also scratched a tree into the wood. People say in certain light it’s hidden but if you look at it long enough you will find it.

Since this blog sponsored the event, I thought that it would be fun to cook up some bacon Saturday morning.

Mosley Cooks Bacon
Me, a world class bacon chef. Everyone told me that they enjoyed waking up to the sweet smell of bacon. It was a good way to start off the day.

The gallery show after the marathon was a lot of fun. It was a BYOB event with live music. The artwork was for sale and a lot of if sold, which was good for the Treehouse since it gets a percentage of sales. The bands at the event were diverse, it went from nerd rock to blues with a little folk in the middle. I can’t wait to sponsor more events in the future.
