Bacon in 2K9: Can I take it to the next level?

Since it’s the first day of the new year, I think this would be a good time to think about my goals for MrBaconpants. I have a few ideas that I think can take this blog to the next level.

Here are my ideas:
1. Add one or two more writers to the blog. This way I can up the post frequency and give readers a reason visit more then once a day.
2. Create a two minute video highlight reel of Bacon Radio. This will be as simple as recording the podcast with my webcam and editing it. I think this would be fun for jokes that Sean and I get animated for. This will be a supplement to the audio podcast.
3. Make more bacon-themed crafts. Since my Enjoy Bacon store was a big hit for Christmas, I want to try to get a few more items in there for next year.

Now for the goals:
1. Gain more traffic/page views. This will be an easy goal to accomplish since the first idea will effect this greatly. The more contact I have, the more traffic Google will send me. I also would like to see more readers revisiting the site a few times a day.
2. Increase revenue for the site. If I can tackle the first goal this will be a breeze. If I can increased revenue I will be able pay my other writers and buy prizes for reader contests.
3. Getting mentioned in old-media. It has been a while since MrBaconpants has been mentioned in a newspaper or on the radio. This year I would like to take it to the next level and get a plug on TV. This is the last frontier of old media that I need to tackle.

If you can think of anything I should do to improve this site let me know. I value my readers and their opinions. Lets make this another great year for bacon!

BMF: Never Feed a Monster Garlic

When living with roommates you have to make sure you know if they have any allergies before cooking them dinner. If you don’t, you will find yourself talking someone to the hospital. I never cooked for my roommates for this reason. Well that and the fact that I hated sharing my bacon.

Only a few more old comics to post, so your going see a few more in the next few days. I am trying to get all the old ones posted before the end of the year. That way I can start 2009 with new Blue Monster Fire comics. If you would like to be a guest artist (Matt that means you too) let me know, I have a few stories written that need drawn.

Bacon Radio: We Hate Fast-food Bacon… Again

Sean was back for this show so the “Sean Lovers” should like it. We talk about fast-food bacon and came to the conclusion that the boycott is back on. Listen to the show to find out why. We also talk about how the documentary Supersize Me is false and wake food.

On show #010 we talked about:
Sean is back; Capitalism; boycott back on; bacon check; bacon cooked to order; Wendy’s is no good; cup holders; coffee; Taco Bell; Harris Grill; free bacon; chicken fried bacon; appetizers; Fat Heads Saloon; bag-o-fries; drive-in; soda (pop); Supersize Me; fast-food diet; homeless; VHS is dead; football; pork flavored turkey strips; wake food…

BMF: Monsters Always Get in Trouble

This comic reminds me of the time when my roommates and I thought it would be fun to toss things into the ceiling fan. We rented and hated our landlord at the time, so we didn’t care about ruining it. We started off with ping pong balls and ended with a phone book. If you want to know the phone book explode into a million pages.

I never knew till then, how much damage a ceiling fan could dish out. Oh and it did mess up the ceiling fan, so kids don’t try this at home.

Bacon Radio: The Special Guest

Sean had other engagements last Wednesday so I asked Beth to co-host with me. She did a really good job, so I think we are going to try and have her on more often. I am still trying to work something out with Sean and Beth to have at least one more show before the end of the year. Keep checking our talkshoe page for the latest schedule.

On show #009 we talked about:
Special Guest Host Beth; Trans Siberian Orchestra; Bacon Check; Pregnant people can eat nitrate free bacon; Bagels are the Devil; Mac NEWS; Macworld w/o Steve Jobs; lots of Apple talk; Stuff White People Like; Happy Holidays; black toilet seats; gift giving stress; bacon wrapped green beans; iphone talk; ipod law; porn again; reporter says the “c” word; Beth complaints about her first podcast; New Years Eve show; 2009 the year of bacon; Christmas beers; Elf beers; the brown note

Chicken Fried Bacon with Gravy

While I was browsing though Youtube today, I found a video about Chicken Fried Bacon. It seems that a restaurant called Sodolak’s Original Country Inn in Snook, TX is cooking this stuff up. I have heard of people making this before, but this is the first time I have seen it being sold at a restaurant.

About 1:25 into the video you will see how owner Frank Sodolak came up with the idea. This guy is a true bacon lover.

Frank says, eating chicken fired bacon is as American as eating apple pie. Tell me what you think about this amazing new appetizer.

Fake Shark Real Zombie: Releasing a New EP

I am always in search of new ear candy (music) to enjoy. Lucky for me, I write an awesome blog that people who promote bands seem to enjoy. Today, I got an email from The Muse Box, a company that promotes bands. They wanted to make sure I knew that a band called Fake Shark Real Zombie was releasing a new EP January 9th, 2009 entitled “Angel Lust”.

I never heard of this band so I did some digging around on MySpace and Google. What I found out was that this band is 3 years old and is from Canada. That’s not a big surprise since it seems there is a lot of good music coming from Canada (Tokyo Police Club for example). If you check out their Myspace you will hear that the band has a dance and hardcore punk sound, but something still sounds kinda generic about it (I can’t seem to put my finger on it). This disappointed me, with such a cool name I was hoping for something more.

Well, I am happy to report that with this new EP, they are defining an unique sound. The four tracks that are on the 12 minute EP are proof that they retooling their sound and making it their own. You can really tell this band is maturing musically. It’s like if you put the music from Refused, Shape of Punk to Come and the vocal sounds of Hot Hot Heat, you would get something that sounds like this new EP. Sadly the single off the EP, Angle Lust, doesn’t do this analogy justice. I think it’s the one track that is trying to prepare the older fans for the new sound.

You are going to have to wait until January to see if I am right about the new sound for Fake Shark Real Zombie. In the meantime you can listen to the single Angel Lust.

Closing Comments: If you asked me if I liked this band I would say kind of. I think they are improving, but they need to improve more. I really like the dance/punk mix, but they’re missing something. Maybe they have it during there live performance and it’s not being captured on the recordings. I do hear their live shows are out of control, so if they make it to Pittsburgh, I will let you know.

I give the “Angel Lust” EP 3 out of 5 bacon strips. Feel free to let me know what you think about the band and/or the single.
