Bear Republic’s Racer 5 IPA is a Great Hoppy Beer

This year every Thursday I am going to post a new micro brew that I enjoy. I am going to call this new weekly feature “Thirsty Thursday”. I may not have time to write my own review of the beer but I will share as much as I can about it.

This week’s “Thirsty Thursday” brew is Bear Republic’s Racer 5 IPA. The Bear Republic brewery was founded by third and fourth generation Sonoma County residents. They started out home brewing then found their very own brew pub. Their recipes have been developed over several years of trial and error in homebrewing. The Racer 5 IPA is known as Americas Best IPA and has won over 4 awards in the past five years.

Racer 5 IPA
ABV: 7.0% IBU: 75 OG: 1.070 Color: Golden
This hoppy IPA is a full bodied beer brewed with American pale and crystal malts and heavily hopped with Chinook, Cascade, Columbus and Centennial. There’s a trophy in every glass.
12oz. 6 pack | 12 oz. 12 pack | 22oz. | keg

Racer 5 is a very hoppy micro but it’s somehow also balanced with an explosion of hoppy flavor. I really enjoy this beer with a bacon cheeseburger or anything else with cheese and meat. I find this beer very drinkable. This one is my go-to beer for an early spring cookout.

Use your Fingers to Flip Bacon

If you have been cooking bacon for as long as I have you’ve probably mastered your own flipping technique. I usually use the fork for thin bacon and a spatula for the thicker variety. Well, now there is a new way to flip your bacon: finger tongs.

Cooking Gadgets recently did a post about the Fusion Silicon Finger Tongs, they sell for about $18 on Think Geek. They say they can handle heat up to 500 degrees (that’s some pretty hot pork belly) and be washed in a dishwasher.

I am not sure if I would ever use finger tongs to flip my favorite meat. I like the challenge of dodging splattering grease while I go in for a flip. Also since I usually cook high quality bacon the splattering is at a minimum. If I was planning to cook the cheap stuff which contains a lot of water (that causes splattering), I would think about getting these.

Sure, you could use them for other things so they could be handy to have around. But as a bacon lover I don’t see a need for them when I enjoy my favorite food.

Chatham County Line – Bacon in the Skillet

In 2010 I am starting a new feature on the site called “Music Monday”, where I post a new music video every Monday. Since Mondays are usually the worst day of the week I hope to pick myself and everyone else up with some great music (not always having to do with bacon).

This week’s Music Monday band is Chatham County Line out of Raleigh, North Caroline. With their hit song “Bacon in the Skillet” off their self-titled debut album back in 2003. They have a new album in the works for later this spring.

Chatham County Line is an American bluegrass group who formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1999. In 2003 they released their debut self-title album Chatham County Line, followed by 3 more, Route 23 in 2005, Speed of the Whippoorwill in 2006, and IV in 2008.

Rocco of Bacon Freak has Acquired Bacn.com

Bacn.com has fallen into the hands of my nemesis Rocco “Boss Hog” Loosbrock, owner of Coastal Vineyard’s and BaconFreak.com. I’m happy for Scott Kveton and the other founders of Bacn.com for being able to make a profitable startup in a year. I’m just worried about what will happen to all their hard work in the hands of someone with a poor track record in the Bacon Nation.

For those who don’t know why I distrust Rocco please read my post about how I wanted him exiled from the Bacon Nation. He stole my content and posted it on his own website like it was his own. What makes it worse is he never even references anything I do for the bacon community. It’s just frustrating when you work hard on producing something just to have it stolen, but that’s the risk you take when you publish your work online.

After writing that post early last year I have since forgiven Rocco and decided to just never reference anything he ever does on my blog. This is where the acquisition of Bacn.com causes a problem. I really like the idea behind Bacn.com and I think not talking about on my site would be a disservice to my readers.

Rocco if you’re reading this remember this next part. I will continue to support Bacn.com if he can uphold the original idea behind the site.

Bac’n is a group of bacon enthusiasts drawn together with the dream of providing access to the world’s best bacon. We scour the earth looking for truly magical pork.

I hope I will never see the low quality bacon that Rocco sells on BaconFreak.com being sold on Bacn.com. If that ever happens I could no longer support Bacn.com. I owe it to the Bacon Nation to only support and endorse truly great bacon products.

I would like to end this post on a positive note by wishing Scott, Jason and Michael luck on their next adventure. They will always be a part of the Bacon Nation (even if they turn vegan one day). I will also like to wish Rocco luck and I hope he can continue what they have started a year ago. Please don’t let the Bacon Nation down.

Pregnant Women Need to Eat More Bacon

In a story published by the Daily Mail in the UK, it has been reported that pregnant women that eat bacon produce smarter offspring. Now I know what you thinking, “I thought prego women should stay away from nitrites”. Well, every true bacon lover knows you can buy it nitrite free, and soon all pregnant women will know this too.

The brain enhancing nutrient in our favorite meat is something called choline, which is a water-soluble essential nutrient. Scientists at the University of North Carolina say it helps babies in the womb develop brains that are better with memory and recall.

Dr Gerald Weissmann, editor-in-chief of the journal that published the research told The Telegraph: ‘We may never be able to call bacon a health food with a straight face, but [similar studies] are already making us rethink what we consider healthy and unhealthy. (read the whole story)

I believe the other studies he is talking about are the ones I’ve covered before. Where eating bacon was healthier than ice cream and it saving your life in a heart attack.

With new laws in California being passed to control what we can and cannot eat I am thankful for studies like this. If bans on certain foods become popular with the masses we can fight back with science and tell them to let us keep our beloved pork belly.

They may take our lives but they can never take our bacon!
