Bacon Color Wheel Project

I recently got an email from a guy named Neil telling me about his Bacon Color Wheel Project. It seems Neil has successfully colored or dyed bacon. He has even eaten it and says it teats and smells exactly like regular bacon. Check out some of the photos below:

The photos of the project look great! I really do love the colors but not sure how I feel about food coloring on my bacon. I would be afraid it would add a bast taste to it. More power to him for experimenting and it was nice to know Neil ate the bacon so it didn’t go to waste.

You can read all about the project on the Graphic Design Forum. Near the end of the thread you will learn that Neil also invited a great way to put bacon on a stick. I am not going to spoil the surprise so you just going to have to read it and find out yourself.

Bacon LIVE: Sugar Tax is a Bacon Tax

On today’s show Sean and I went down a road we promised we would never go down on Bacon LIVE, politics. But this political topic was to close to bacon for comfort. The Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh is talking about the idea of a sugar tax on sugary drinks. Even fellow famous Pittsburgh bloggers are pissed about the idea.

I am not going to get in to all the deals we covered on the show but a sugar tax is a terrible idea. It would pave the way to other taxes on “unhealthy” foods like bacon. I feel that the Mayor should take a good long look at were he is spending money and make some cut backs. I will never move back to the city if they add yet another tax to the people that live, shop, and work there.

We also reviewed the last of the Burger’s Smokehouse bacon and talked about Bacon Jesus. Sean also complained about Pizza Hut ads and people on the left. Next week will be back to our normal non-political bacon fueled rants.

Donkey Tees Beings us Bacon Shirt Week

A few days ago the designer for Donkey Tees emailed me to tell me about “Bacon Shirt Week”. Starting Sunday March 21, 2010 they will be releasing a new Bacon shirt everyday for a week. That’s a lot of bacon shirts.

I will keep you posted on the new shirts via our facebook page and twitter.

They gave me a coupon code, “baconlive”, so you guys can save 15% of your orders. When you use that code we get credit for the sale which helps support our bacon addiction.

Some of the shirt slogans are:

  • Edward Bacon Hands
  • BYOB – Bring Your Own Bacon
  • Bacon is the new black
  • I bacon heard bacon
  • The creation of bacon

Just to give you a little back story on Donkey Tees, they started in Cincinnati, OH in 2005 as a retail store selling funny shirts. In 2007 they begin selling online to the world and now people think there’re big deals.

Bacon Shirt Week is a great way to support an independently owned, bacon loving, tee shirt shop. I always thought we needed more bacon shirts in the world. If it works out well for these guys I sure other designers are going to do the same. Then we could live in a world where we could wear a different bacon shirt everyday for a year without repeats. That’s a world I want to live in!

Note: The links to Donkey Tees in this post are affiliate links. When you click on them and buy something we will get $5 for the sale and you save 15%. I am telling you this just in case you want to be a jerk and not use the links or coupon code. Also, we are transparent bloggers and we like for you guys to know when and how we are making money. Super Turbo Action Pig, Making Super Bacon

Over the past few weeks I have been doing some freelance blogging for Touch Arcade, one of my favorite iPhone gaming blogs. I have been waiting for a game to come out that made sense to post on this blog so I could tell you about my new gig. Well last week that game came out and it is called Super Turbo Action Pig.

Super Turbo Action Pig is a single button avoidance game. The object of the game is to avoided obstacles that want to turn you into sausage (I wish it was bacon). Check out the games trailer to see what I am talking about.

I have been playing the game a lot and I really enjoy it. That art and humor that’s featured in the game is really what makes it. My only complaint is I wish I was the villain in the game and I was trying to turn Super Turbo Action Pig in to Super Bacon!

If you are a fan of pickup and play games, and a lover of pork, than I would suggest you check out this game in the App Store (only .99). For me it’s taken the place of Doodle Jump when I only have a few minutes to kill.

If you have an iPhone or ipod Touch and enjoy gaming, be sure to follow my posts over at Touch Arcade. I am the new guy over there so seeing a few familiar faces in my comments would be nice.

Chocolate Chip, Bacon, Pecan Cookies

It’s the weekend and that means its time to anther installment of “Weekend Cooking“. This weeks recipe comes from Elisa, a friend from work. She made me Chocolate Chip-Bacon-Pecan Cookies for me for my Birthday.

She made these before and I thought they were amazing. Other people were a little taken back, but I think thats because they don’t like the idea of eating bacon for a dessert. Everyone said that the flavors were good and they enjoyed the cookie but they couldn’t eat it with out making a face.

This time when she made the cookies I didn’t share many with the people at work. I wanted to share this batch with fellow bacon lovers. Sadly, I eat most of them myself so the only other people that tried them were Beth and my Mom. They both loved them and really like that fact that the bacon added something savory to the cookie.

Here is an eating tip: The longer you have these cookies around the more bacony they taste. These cookies are like a good soup, there better the next day.

Next time your in the mood for cookies give these a try. Elisa says that she really like the cookie dough this recipe makes. You can add any mix ins you want to the dough to make an original bacon cookie.

Chocolate Chip-Bacon-Pecan Cookies

Makes about 18 thick-and-chewy cookies

What you will need:

  • 5 strips bacon
  • 1 cup, plus 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 stick unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Directions:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook bacon, turning several times, until browned and done, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Chop finely.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda and salt.
  4. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugars. Add egg and vanilla extract, and beat until just blended. Add the dry ingredients; beat until just incorporated and the flour is dissolved. Stir in the chocolate chips, pecans and bacon.
  5. Drop one large tablespoon cookie dough 2 to 3 inches apart (as they will spread) on baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until firm and golden brown around the edges, and still slightly soft in the center. Transfer to a rack and cool for 15 minutes.
  6. Can be stored on countertop for one to two days, then refrigerated in an airtight container.

This recipe is from a NPR article called, Bacon Gets Its Just Desserts. Be sure to check out the article there are a few other good looking recipes you might want to try.

Bacon LIVE: Bacon Freak is a Bacon Fake

On last night’s show Sean brought up “Bacon Freak”. I usually try not to do that for two reasons, one I hate talking bad about people even if I don’t like them, and two I hate promoting his crappy bacon and website. I am sure if you read this blog a lot you will know why there is bad blood between me and Racco (owner of BF). If not the long story shorts is, he stole my content and he sells really bad bacon. He’s a sleazy sales man trying to cash in on peoples love of bacon.

A lot of fellow bacon lovers agree with me. Every time I write something about this I get emails and tweets of support. Sadly, there usually from people that got suckered in by his crappy blog to buy something form his store or fellow bloggers whose content was stolen.

Knowing this I could NEVER support anything Bacon Freak does. I have come to the conclusion that any website that supports Bacon Freak is a Bacon Fake.

I am not going to mention any names in this post but if you go to a bacon blog and see an ad for them email the author and tell them they lost your respect and that they should remove it. We need to make sure the bacon community only supports that best bacon products. Instead of buying bacon from a site like Bacon Freak buy it from companies that support real farmers and sell great products.

Check out my links page for places to buy great bacon online.

We also talked about Segways and reviewed more bacon from Burger’s Smokehouse. If you not into watching rants I would skip the first half of the show. Enjoy Bacon!

Bacon Rocket Science Could Take Us to the Moon

The guy that brought us that ridiculously viral song “Hover Bacon” has created what he calls a great human achievement, a bacon rocket.

We made a bacon rocket! Rocket Science and Bacon Science, 2 disciplines at the pinnacle of human achievement, finally united!

There are two things I love about this video

  1. The song in the background.
  2. The smoke alarm that kicks in at the end of the video.

This is a great advancement for bacon and I think the next step would be to use bacon for brain surgery. But something tells me that wouldn’t be a funny video to watch, so maybe we should just stick with rockets.
