Denny’s Test Kitchen Experience

Most of you know by now that Denny’s paid for Sean and I to fly down to their Headquarters to try their new Baconalia menu. While we where there Sean and I got to see a place the many will never see, the Denny’s Test Kitchen.

When we walked in they had the whole menu wheeled out on a cart for us to drool at. Sean told me that he couldn’t wait to sink he teeth in to that fired pork belly. Lucky for me Sean was on his best behavior and stayed in his seat.

Before they would let us eat the food, they wanted to share with us how the created Baconalia menu and what market research was done to make sure it was something customers were ready for. I guess not everyone is a bacon fanatic like us. Sean and I both agree that it was interesting to see behind the curtain of what it takes to bring a new recipe from concept to your local Denny’s.

Sean said, “I always knew it was a little more complicated than some guy standing in a kitchen throwing bacon in a pancake and then calling it a day but the amount of research and testing can leave your head spinning.”

We could only wish it was the simple.

While they were talking about the menu and what everyone on the product development team does they gave us some fruit. When I looked over a Sean I know what he was thinking, ” Why are we not being force fed handfuls of bacon”?

They ensured us that fruit was just a palate cleanser and boy I was glad they had it. If it wasn’t for the fruit I think I would have eaten my arm off. We could smell the bacon cooking from the other room.

After all the talking was over it was finally time to try the food. They started things off with a small sample of all three bacons featured in the menu, Hickory Smoked, Pepper, and Turkey. That was then followed by the rest of the menu, Bacon Flapjacks, BBBLT Sandwich, Bacon Meatloaf, and the Maple Bacon Sundae.

Now that we have this introduction out of the way, and the discloser that we tried this food in a controlled environment. It’s time to get on with the reviews. For the remainder of the week, we will be posting up our reviews of each item. Each review will have my opinion and Sean’s. That way you will get the full Mr. Baconpants teams views in one post!

Stay tuned for more…

Road Trip: Denny’s is cooking something up with Bacon [Updated]

Now I don’t know how much I can tell you right now, but since the guys at Bacon Salt already told the Bacon Nation a few deals, I guess tell you a little more.

Denny’s is planning something big with bacon. I still don’t know all the details but what I do know is, there’re flying Sean and I to the Denny’s test kitchen and told us to come hungry.

That could only mean one thing, bacon!

When I was in High School Denny’s was often my restaurant of choice. They were open late, and had a friendly wait staff (even to unruly high school kids). So when they told me they were flying me all expenses paid to the HQ I was pumped. It brought be back to my good childhood memories.

Make sure you follow me on twitter @MrBaconpants so you can stay up to date on the trip. We may get sometime to do a special Bacon LIVE podcast with one of the chiefs.

I would also like to disclose right now that, just because they are paying for me to fly down does not mean there are also paying for a glowing review. Sean and I have high expectation for bacon and we hope Denny’s can met them. We also owe it to you, our readers, to always give you our honest opinions. We have a strict no selling out policy at Mr. Baconpants HQ.

We can’t wait to enjoy bacon. This is going to be big!

Update: The Daily Bacon got wind to the new Baconalia menu form Denny’s! Check it out!! I will be sure to share better photos and reviews ones I have them!

Second Update: I just found a better photo of them explaining the new Baconalia menu. Check it out here!

Bacon LIVE: Last show in old Bacon Studio

No we are not ending the show permanently, just moving where we record it. I recently bought a house, which is the main reason my blog posting it has drop. Buying a house is a lot of work and then moving in isn’t a vacation.

I hope in the next few weeks I will be able to increase my posting again. There is a ton of bacon news I am missing. Beth, the beer review girl and future Mrs. Baconpants, should be doing the same. I know she has a few beers she’s been itching to post up too.

On this weeks show we mainly talked about the old studio and how amazing I hope to make the new one. Who knows me may get a pro setup… not sure what’s in my budget yet.

There will be no show next week, so look for our new digs, March 30th. See you in two weeks and enjoy Bacon!

Bacon LIVE: Russian Bacon Snacks

This week on Bacon LIVE Sean and I tried Russian Bacon Snacks. They were sent to us by Heather who after seeing our review of English bacon snacks, thought we would enjoy trying Russian ones. We always enjoy trying new things so we where happy that she sent them to us.

The snacks were like nothing we ever tasted before and you really should watch/listen to the show to get our reactions. After the show I found out that the snacks where made out of Rye, which I think would have prepare use better if we knew that before we reviewed them. Rye bread has a very distinct flavor.

Sorry for getting these show notes posted up late this week, but Bacon LIVE is moving to a new location. I am still not sure if I will be setup in time for next week but I will keep you posted.

Bacon LIVE: Bacon Beer Review & Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival

On last night’s show Sean and I tried Bacon Beer. Now this was not your standard bacon inspired beer, it had real bacon right in the beer. This was the first drinkable beer like this I have ever tried. I will be writing a full review about this soon, along with how the creator made it. Watch the show to get our first impressions.

Also covered on the show was all the food I had at the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival. Again I will be writing a post about this but I wanted to share what I ate with Sean and see what he thought. The food was so impressive that Sean said he is planning to go next year.

Other topics you will not want to miss on this show are, Sean’s review of a new Arby’s sandwich and non-bacon bacon related news. See you guys next week!

4th Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival: Recap

The Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival is over and we are back home in PIttsburgh. Now it’s time to look back at the event and search the internet for images, videos, and blog posts about it.

First up is my thoughts on this years event. If I had to sum up everything in to one word it would be “big”. Even though this year had fewer bacon purveyors, they made up for it with the addition of 15 restaurants (a festival first). The venue was also bigger than last year, spanning two floors. The lower floor was a huge open court yard. You can see what I mean in some of the photos found in the links below. This year’s Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival proved once again, bigger is always better.

During the event, Seth Hall, a member of the Iowa Bacon Board, asked me, “If I could change one thing about the event, what would it be”? To me the answer is simple: More. More bacon, more beers, and more restaurants. I could see the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival being the place national and local restaurants launch new bacon products. Like a Macworld for bacon.

Every year they reinvent themselves and some how take an already great event and make it better. I feel that within a few years this will be the food festival that everyone else will try to imitate. It’s turning into the perfect mix of bacon convention and bacon party!

If you wonder what I thought about the food, I will be writing a separate post about that later this week.

Now its time to see what everyone else had to say about the event. This year its been a little easier collecting all the content that spawned from the festival. Catchfire Media, the guys that run the festivals twitter and Facebook accounts, and I teamed up and used the same hashtag (#BRBF4) for everything. This made it simple to stay up to date on what was happening at the event, and now people are using it to share their thoughts on how great the event was. You can also find event feedback on their Facebook page.

Here is a list of photos, videos, and blog posts I found so far from the event:

If you find any coverage that I missed please let me know so I can add it to the list. This is such a big event that I can’t cover every part of it myself, so I’d like to thank everyone that helps add to this list.

Beth and I can’t wait to see what they have planned for next year. All I know so far is that they want to double it in size again! Think about it, 3,000 bacon lovers all in one place. With that many of us in one location we can change the world!

Enjoy bacon and see you next year!

‘Twas the night before the 4th Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival

It’s finally here after a whole year of waiting, the 4th Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival.

If you want to see whats happing at the event you can follow me on twitter, follow the event @BRBaconFest, and/or follow the hashtag #brbf4. I am going to try and get other people at the festival to use the same tag so we can get a nice snapshot of whats going on. It’s so big I can’t cover all the bacon goodness on my own!

Since its the day before the big festival Sean said I should post up his “Twas the night before Bacon Fest” poem. Here here is the first part of it:

‘Twas the night before Bacon Fest and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
The frying pan was placed on the stove top with care
In hopes that Mr. Baconpants would soon be there

The children were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of thick cut bacon danced in their heads
And Mom in her bacon bra and I in my bacon tie
Had just settle down for a rerun of Bacon Live

When down from the kitchen there arose such a clatter
I could smell something cooking and hear the sizzle and splatter…

Read the gripping finally here.
