Everyone Loves Free Doughnuts

If you can remember from last week I kept plugging the art show that Matt Gondek and I were putting on called, “Doughnuts and Art”. I would just like to say that it was a great success! Even though I was jetlagged I still managed to keep everything running smoothly. There were only a few snags during the night but those were behind the scenes and the guests never noticed.

Everyone told me that they had a great time and I was surprised that many people stayed for the whole event. Which is amazing to me since the event was 8 hours long. I guess the fact that the event was really three types of shows (Art, Bands, and Dance Party) it kept people interested.

The artwork that was shown was amazing. I really can’t even put what I saw into words, you’re just going to have to come to the next show and see it for yourself. If you really can’t wait, you can click here and see what pictures people have uploaded on Flicker of the show.

The music was a great surprise. Just before the show, two of the bands canceled, but I didn’t freak out. I knew finding bands to play the event would not be difficult since there is a waiting list to get on the next show in August. The two last-minute bands that played were out of this world. One was a one-man show called Buddy Nut and the other was a two-man cover band that could almost play every song the crowd requested.

The dance party lasted until 2 am and I had people dancing till the last song was done. Even during the dance party two art pieces were sold. I guess good music and dancing get people in the mood to buy art.

We are planning to do Doughnuts and Art 2.0 in August. If you are an artist or band that would like to be part of the next event, just send me an email.

Thanks to everyone that helped make this a great event, and I can’t wait to do it all over again in August.

Back in the Burgh

I am finally back in Pittsburgh! I really wish I would have been able to update this while I was in Vegas but the internet in the hotel cost 11.99 a day. That is a little to rich form my blood.

I will write a post about my adventures in Vegas sometime this week. I am still waiting for my friend to email me the pictures. I was lame and didn’t bring my camera along, but luckily the people I work with had their’s.

I would like to thank everyone that emailed me and continued to comment on this blog. It’s nice to know that you’re missed.

I am Alive!

I am still in Vegas. Like everything else here the internet is not free so I can’t update right now. I wish I could, I have so much to talk about.

las_vegas.jpg

Well I have to get back to work before I get yelled at. Also, I don’t think I am allowed to be online with this computer. I will be home Saturday in time for the DoughnutsandArt.com event!

Las Vegas, Here I Come

Tomorrow I am going to Las Vegas to work a conference (sadly not for pleasure). Since I will be working the event I have long 12-hour days ahead of me. But I am not too upset about it because the overtime pay is great! I will be coming back 6 am Saturday so I can still set up Doughnuts and Art.

I am bringing my laptop this time, so I hope I can find some cheap or free wireless. I would like to still update this a few times next week. I hear that I might have trouble because nothing is free in Vegas. I know they say drinks are free, but how much money are you losing in the slot machine to get it? Wish me luck!

Government Banning Plastic Bags

I was browsing AynRand.org and found a letter to the editor about the Government in San Francisco banning plastic bags. I don’t know for sure if this is true since I don’t live anywhere near there, but if it is, it’s sickening. Click here to read the letter.

bags

I never like it when I hear about stuff like this. The plastic bag is a great invention and it’s not right that they take them away. Not only can you use them to take your items to your car, you can also use them to take your lunch to work. I also hear they’re good to pick up your dog’s crap off the sidewalk. Even though the people that live on my street don’t seem to know this (There is dog crap on my sidewalk!). So you see banning plastic bags is actually a disservice to the customers and society.

What will we use to pack our lunches, clean up sidewalks, use as a garbage bag in our cars, fill with newspapers to recycle, collect aluminum cans in, and use to put dirty clothes in when on a long trip?

But to get back to the point of the letter, the writer makes a very good point. “People, not plastic bags, are responsible for littering, and we already have laws against littering.” So the environmentalists are copping out. They should just try to educate people not to waste bags and to use ones that are reusable. They should use their time and money on education, not lobbying! But like most unreasonable people (liberals), they just want everything to be easy and have big daddy government step in and tell us little people to play nice.

Well I don’t want to play nice! If you live in San Francisco and want a plastic bag, let me know and I will mail you some. That way when you go to the store you can use your plastic bag with pride, knowing that you are standing up for the right to choose, paper or plastic.

Bacon in Review

Ever since I really started to promote this site I have been gaining more reads. I guess that would be the obvious out come, but I never really thought it would happen. Not only are more people coming to the site but there reading too. It kind of puts a smile on my face to know that someone out there enjoys my poorly spelled postings.

If you don’t believe me here is a post to prove it. It’s a review about MrBaconpants.com. With a great picture of bacon right in the review. So even if you don’t like the review you can’t deny the allure of the bacon.

The only bad thing about this now is I now know people read this. So that means I need to step it up and not disappoint. I would hate to have all my hard work getting these readers go to waste. So I will keep posting, if you keep reading. :)

Top Five CDs in my Car

I was going through the CDs I have floating around in my car the other day, and it got me thinking. Out of all the music I have in my car, I only listen to five of these CDs, at least once every few weeks. They’re kind of like my standbys and they’re always handy when I am in the mood for one of them. I know you are all dying to know what CDs I am talking about, so here is the list.

marked.jpg
The Marked Men, Fix My Brain (2006): I obtained this CD from a party I had at my house. I always tell people to bring their own music to the party, since I always like to hear new stuff. I guess they forgot it and the next morning I found it in the CD player. On my next trip out, I took it to my car, where I listened to it for a week straight. Even to this day I don’t get sick of it. It’s a great one to play on a warm day with your windows down on a long road trip.

punk.jpg
Refused, Shape of Punk to Come (1998): This is my anger CD. When I am having a bad day and need to vent, this is the one I play. I love this one a lot because all the songs are a journey, since you really don’t know where the song is going to go to next. You will just have to listen to it to know what I am talking about. Also I would like to note that this is one of the only hardcore CDs I can listen to; most of the other hardcore bands out there just sound like loud noise to me.

trio.jpg
Alkaline Trio, From Here to Infirmary (2001): This is one of my all-time favorite bands, and this is my all-time favorite CDs by them. Every song is a sing-along. If you are not singing along by the third time you listen, you must have never had any drinking and heartache in your life. If for some unknown reason you don’t like this, don’t give up on the band, and buy their newest release, “Crimson.” I know a lot of people that hated them at first, but then loved them after listening to their newer stuff.

new.jpg
New Bomb Turks, Switchblade Tongues, Butterknife Brains (2003): This is just a well-rounded punk CD, and when I am in the mood for some loud catchy punk songs, I pop this in. They also do some great covers on this one.

alps.jpg
Nine Black Alps, Everything Is (2005): This was one of the first CDs I ran out to buy after listening to Pandora. If you don’t know what Pandora is, then search this blog; I wrote a story about them. At first I hated the CD; the only song I like was the one that was on Pandora. But then I kept giving it another chance and it finally grew on me. This is the one I play when I just want to chill out after a stressful day.

Well that’s about it. I thought it would be nice to give you some insight into what I listen to the most in my car and why. Feel free to let me know what you listen to when you’re angry or sad. You never know, you may find out that the CD you listen to when you’re angry is what someone else listens to, to have a good time.

Can my Blog Make Money?

This morning when I was checking my mail I found that I had a new comment on my post about John Chow. I quickly got excited because that means that my site was posted on his home page. But then when I went to check out his blog, my web browser informed me that his page can not be found. My excitement is gone, for now. I guess I am not the only one that has server issues from time to time.

Note: I am at work and they will not install Firefox.

Well since I couldn’t obsessively read Johns blog I figured I would check out the commenter’s. I was pleasantly surprises that the first article was pretty interesting to me. It was about people’s reaction when you tell them you’re trying to make money from your blog. It’s a pretty good read because it answers a lot of the question people ask. For instants, “Where dose the money come from?” and “How do you even start a blog?” So before you start ask me these questions read this post.

Also I know I have been dropping the bacon on reviewing indie bands lately. It’s because I haven’t at the time to listen to any of the new tracks I downloaded from emusic. Once I get some time I will try to post two a week. The secret is, when I do get time, I am going to write more then one so I get a back log of content to post. That way if one day I have writers block I have something in the hold.

MySpace, Get Out of MyFace

I was telling people I was going to do this a long time now and now I think it’s time. I am going to delete my MySpace account. Since I don’t have any use for it anymore. All it dose is help people jump to conclusions about what kind of person I am, with out even talking to me first. Most of the time if it’s a negative conclusion, they just miss understood the facts and if they would just talk to me they would realize that. I don’t have time to write in my blog and keep my MySpace politically correct (so people want assume they hate me).

It’s funny, when I tell people I am going to do this I get two statements back. The first statement is, “Good I hate MySpace too!” and the second is, “If you delete your MySpace how will I talk to you”? I first one doesn’t bother me and I was expecting to hare it, but I can’t get over the second.

Are these people joking? Do they really think that if I get rid of my account that they will never talk to me again? How did we get in contact before? I bet you could call me or send me an email, if you remember how. It amazes me how people are so dependent on a website.

That is the second reason I am doing this. I don’t want to promote something that people are using to replace real human interaction. If you are my friend then you should know that I am going to talk to you, and that I don’t need a MySpace account to make plans with you. I think the only people I am going to miss out on are the ones that I don’t see everyday. But still they could just email or visit this blog to track me down.

I don’t know why my feelings about this site changed so much? Maybe it’s because I am getting older, or the fact I enjoy a good face to face conversation and hate having one that takes place in over 25 MySpace messages.

So in closing I would like to say stop reading about people and start listening to them. It’s amazing what you can learn about someone with a good conversation over coffee.
